I recently wrote a blog about understanding your root beliefs about money. You can read that here.
Today is part 2.
The second step to having a proper money mindset is having a clear vision.
This is a big topic but let’s break it down a bit.
To me, a vision is a picture of an ideal future.
Think of your future as a blank canvas and you get to paint on it the picture of what you’d like it to be like in 3, 5, 10, or even 20 years.
I used to believe creating a vision wasn’t really practical since there were too many variables and uncontrollables in life.
I now know that having a clear vision is one of the most important things we can do.
Early on in my career, things weren’t so pretty. We all have different things to overcome but I feel like we (my wife and I) were in a pretty big whole.
We only had a bit of hope (I guess that’s all we needed) and as crazy as it seemed began creating a vision.
I remember ever Wednesday night, my wife and would journal about our goals and what we wanted life to be like. Everything from our family, house, cars, business, etc.
It gives me chills to look through that notebook now (I’m so glad I still have it) and see that everything in there has come true.
We didn’t know exactly how we’d get there when we started but we knew we had to start.
I could leave it at that but this next example is too cool not to share.
Years ago I was at an event and the guy running it handed everyone a blank check (fake). He said, “I don’t know exactly how this works but write a check to yourself for an amount that is so absurd you don’t even know how you’d get there. Put a date on it and just fold it up and tuck it in your wallet.”
I did exactly what he said. I wrote a check to myself for $50,000 (representative of revenue for one month), tucked it in my wallet, and for the most part forgot all about it
The day came when we hit that number and I wondered how much of it had to do with that little exercise.
*This whole idea was inspired by Jim Carey. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, Google “Jim Carey check.” It’s pretty mind blowing.
I can go on and on but I hope the power of having a clear vision is evident now.
Once you have a vision and a powerful WHY, the sky’s the limit.
